Dear Mary,
I am writing this in support of The Twin
to Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation and their good work.
The birth of an ill infant, or worse, the loss of a child
under any circumstances is a life time crisis.
The work of support groups like The Twin
to Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation can be critical to
a family who is facing a pregnancy with TTTS or the loss of
one or both of their twins to this condition. Parents often
have feelings of guilt and need to understand that TTTS is
not something they caused, it just happens sometimes.
In order for parents of TTTS pregnancies
to understand and deal with what is happening to them they
need, and deserve, good, timely diagnostic information. One
of the most important tools for supplying this information
is Diagnostic Sonography. The sonographic evaluation of fetal
size, growth, and well-being is a complex process that requires
the sonographer to not only have the required cognitive and
psychomotor skills; it requires that they have an understanding
of the disease processes so that they may modify the examination(s)
appropriately for the individual case.
Because sonography is the most operator
dependent diagnostic tools in modern medicine, it is unfortunate
that there are no laws or regulations in the USA or in any
state requiring that sonographers have appropriate education
and certifications. The only recourse expectant parents have
is to inquire if the sonographer is certified by the American
Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (www.ardms.org).
I encourage you to assist The Twin to
Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation in any way you can. I
also appeal to you to help expectant parents understand that
they should inquire if the person, physician, nurse, or others
who may be using Diagnostic Sonography, is appropriately certified
by the ARDMS.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Sincerely,
