On July 16, 2003, Ella and Reese were born in Tampa, Florida at St. Joseph's Women's hospital to Brian and Stephanie Mackey. Despite the tremendous efforts of the staff there and Dr. Rueben Quintero, the girls were unable to survive due to the effects of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. The syndrome is the result of shared blood vessels in the placenta of some identical twins. Research for the treatment of this disease is ongoing and developing continually through the efforts of Dr. Quintero and organizations like the Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation in Ohio.

Both Dr. Quintero and the Foundation each worked in their own way to offer the support, care, and education our family needed to get through the medical and emotional ordeal of treating the twins. Although Ella and Reese did not survive, the efforts of these amazing people are helping others to survive. Without their help, many families would have no success or support in dealing with the difficulties of the disease. Our journey would have been impossible without the medical minds and healing hearts of these wonderful people.
